Fight for Common Sense
Thank you, DA

Just search "purge" in Most Recent Journals and you'll find a disturbing collection of accounts spreading false information (also way to out yourselves), most of which have content that clearly breaks DeviantArt's policies that have not changed.

Here's a 2013 archive of the rules

https://www.deviantartsupport.com/en/article/what-are-the-restrictions-around-erotic-and-fetish-content

Some important points include:

"[...] please be aware that many of the most popular fictional characters are depicted in their original context as being minors under the age of eighteen (18). DeviantArt disregards attempts or claims that these characters have been “age lifted” in order to comply with our policies."

"DeviantArt reserves the right to terminate your account if you post child sexually exploitative material."

"Aging up" canonically minor characters to use in your mature/erotic/fetish work is prohibited - be it overtly sexual or not. Period.

"Don’t post content which fetishizes sexual assault or other non-consensual or forcible intercourse. We understand these situations are complicated and can include personal (survivor stories), historical, or education as part of their narrative, and our staff will take such contexts into account, but we reserve the right to remove such material if we determine that it’s glorifying such situations or make them seem sensual or inviting."

"DeviantArt also does not allow certain other fringe sexual fetish creations, such as incest, necrophilia, amputation, cannibalism, and other similar themes along with other non-consensual situations. Our moderation team understands that many of these topics can be complicated, and we will take context into account during any review; however, if we determine that the purpose of your content is to make any of these situations appear sexy or alluring, it will be removed."

Erotic/Fetish art that requires non-consent or depicts characters that appear to be in turmoil/not consenting is prohibited - be it overtly sexual or not. Period.

This includes animals, they cannot consent.

EDIT/CLARIFICATION: The only UPDATE to Mature Content policies was back in March 2022, and was about monetization:

This "purge" was a long time coming and is not censorship. That would entail content or accounts being banned due to personal beliefs of a staff member when the content or account is not breaking any stated rules.

The accounts that have been banned, and the vast majority of those complaining about it, have content up right now that break the rules.

Maybe just leave?

This is a private company. They can make any rules they want, and I for one am thankful that DeviantArt is taking out the trash.

While I'm disgusted by DA's recent shitstorm and their insulting back-pedalling, the truth is this has been a long time coming.

Frankly, some of the worst experiences I have had stemmed from the people, groups, and especially species I stumbled upon on this platform. Seriously, the OS/CS community is a toxic pile of shit for the most part. While this account is 12 years old, my original was through 1998-2010. I've been here a long time, and while I've had my issues with ToyHouse too, overall I greatly prefer their policies and privacy settings. And anyone who might want to keep in contact with me, likely won't even see this because they are in my Discord servers or groups.

And honestly, it's about time I cut off this potential gateway to any further issues. And as my roster has swelled, I have made a commitment to wrestling back down my to do list. And I could do with a substantially smaller pool of potential adopts. For the vast majority of this year I've only used my account to shop or post art payments for adopts and, well--

My New Years Resolution is to complete all MYO slots and other WIP concepts, and then get through as many adopted design revamps as possible. Over the course of this year I've found surprising solace in focusing only on my private projects, and it's time I cut out time-wasting distractions.

I have so much stored here though, and I regret deactivating my original account rashly and losing much of my old work and first characters. So, I won't be making that mistake again - I will not deactivate, but I am focusing elsewhere. It's been a ride, DA, and while there's been some real assholes, I met the second love of my life here, and some of my closest friends.

I have purged my watchlist to only the very few artists that I would still like to support. Much less stress for me.

Good luck out there,

OkiRose

Must be logged in on TH to see the details and proof but essentially.

I bought an oc from @feathercollective / @chiiiipowder 's PURGE. My TH is Authorized only and this is prominently stated on my profile and profile warnings.

I denied their request to retain access to said character's profile.

Then they proceeded to harass me and even stole the design back on their alternate TH account.

Then proceeded to publicly whine about it on their TH.

See also: NSFW DISCLAIMER [Obviously, nsfw topics are mentioned, so if you don’t like or are underage, don’t click.]

Just because I have characters that act, believe or do certain things doesn’t mean I myself do, or think those things are okay in real life at all. Just because I have ocs that murder people— I don’t think murder is okay. Nor would I ever attempt it in reality. I also don’t openly share most of this material, as it is predominately in private rps that will remain private. The details of such are listed in my disclaimer, and note there are several things that many other users do or consume, that I won’t even touch.

Creators are always being persecuted for exploring or representing a whole host of adult content (I mean consenting adults only), even if reasonable effort is made that mature audiences are the only ones that should be viewing it. Hell, even Stephen King has had backlash for having characters that use adult language, drugs, or are violent, are LGBTQ+, neurodivergent or deviant in some other way; their actions or thoughts don’t equal the actions or thoughts of their creator. (Remember, sadly, being LGBT was considered taboo in the US and still is in many places, and a considerable stigma and misinformation surrounds mental health as well.) I would hope most people have the capacity to understand this concept.

If you don’t like a piece of visual or written fiction involving consenting adults, don’t look. Block them if you must, but move on. You are not going to change anyone’s mind by coming at it like a self-righteous ass who only talks big because you’re behind a keyboard, or even hiding further behind anonymous accounts. The arrogance in demanding strangers on the internet to conform to your ideologies simply because you slapped them with it, is just noise to be filtered out via blocking, as it’s merely an opinion. Regardless how emotionally charged it was.

:new: 4/20/21 EDIT:* I'm not saying people don't have a right to have an opinion, or have an emotional response to content. Of course they do. And they also have the right to leave servers, block users, etc. But that doesn't give them the right to go after those posters and harass them if they are not breaking rules of the platform. Demand they delete characters or "change their ways" when the issue is not a question of illegality, but what definition of taboo or morality one's looking from. Again, I mean adult content that involves consenting adults, no fetishes or anything else involving animals/minors who cannot consent or rape/scenarios where a participant is not consenting. On the matters of taste, and on the matters of morality, there is no argument. Agree to disagree and leave it at that.

None of the admins of the Discord server have gone to that person to harass them, laugh at them, etc. And I'll be the first to say that the NSFW section of Archanes, as a species, was taken down and deleted back on February 26th. The incident will not happen again. No adult member will see content they might not want to see, from admins or otherwise, because we no longer allow any place for it in the server. The only exception being individual Archane's profiles on ToyHouse, which of course are mature flagged. And I apologize to that user, for the upset and for venting comments that later upset you. But in the end I'll agree to disagree on your general stance on legal, fictional media among adults. And that's fine.

Furthermore, I'd like to remind people that the realm of "adult content" may have plenty of categories certain people might find offensive. I have a long list of pornographic themes, contexts and dynamics that I don't like, don't agree with, and find uncomfortable. Not to mention other sensitive topics like suicide, violence or torture, vore, cucking, etc. And that's perfectly reasonable for any adult to not consume the entire spectrum of adult content. So, I don't look. I filter certain tags or don't click on spoiler-tagged material if I'm not sure what it might be. But it's crucial to remember that it is not illegal to produce fictional content exclusively involving and intended for consenting adults. Snuff films, or any sort of adult theme involving minors (fictionalized but especially when is not) very much is. But this very real and serious topic is not even close to the mater at hand, and thus the debate merely boils down to a matter of opinion. And taking the moral high-ground is in fact a logical fallacy in any legitimate philosophical debate. Claiming something is wrong "because (my) God said so" or "because I think it's disgusting" is not an argument, but an opinion. And in the context of fictional content, produced by and intended for mature adults, it's an idiotic one. And again, based on the immature, sensationalist and offensive route they have chosen to take, it is clear they had zero intention of actually changing anyone's mind, but simply to be a dick because it's so easy to do so on the internet without repercussions.

Also, though no part of this issue is even about incest in real life, but FICTION, (an Archane ship of AkumaFox in the NSFW part of the server) I'd like to remind the adults in the room that not even that is universally considered illegal - look it up. Again, taking the moral stance on the argument is a logical fallacy that mature audiences will understand is merely a person's opinion, which is fair enough, but an opinion nonetheless to accept or reject and move on with their lives. Not every culture considers two men holding hands to be romantically charged, nor kissing on the lips. Incest among consenting adults is legal throughout much of Asia; whether you like or agree with that is irrelevant to what's a fact by the law of the region.

Once again, choosing to view fictional content is entirely different from choosing to engage in an action. Again, adults will have the capacity to see this very clear distinction. Choosing to play violent video games, and choosing to unleash violence on a school, are two totally different choices. This is why mature content, is for mature audiences, who again have the mental capacity to realize one choice is fine, the other is illegal and reprehensible. So this argument that posting censored adult content, in the adult-locked portion of a server, is going to "warp people's minds" or "normalize something I find disgusting" is laughably absurd. Because the simple fact is only mature adults should be there, and reasonable steps were taken to ensure that. But if viewing adult content even has the potential to upset someone so much, then they lack the faculties to have access to such content, regardless of what age they happen to be.

If NSFW material truly has the potential to trigger trauma or anxiety, then set age-restricted access to your accounts and access none of it. Simple. Why is it okay to view adult content and scream at people who put additional barriers between their flavor of adult content and you, because it’s not what you like. Again, assuming legitimate trauma/triggering would occur. Being offended and angry is not the same thing and warrants zero response on the content creator’s part. If it was tagged or otherwise behind an additional barrier, even more so. A "black box" in a NSFW server, I'm sorry, is a clear signal that maybe not investigate if you are sensitive. The world doesn't come with trigger warnings for every second of one's life, and it's your responsibility to look out for yourself and your triggers, not the rest of the world's. Disbarring illegal content that I don’t even need to specify here, that would be the mature response.

For the record, I have no twins or siblings that are in a relationship with each other. Nor did I ever plan to; it's just not for me. Nor did the characters in the offending image belong to me (they were AkumaFox & Kukeim's), nor was it my art, and yet 90% of the anonymous backlash has been name-dropping me because I found the user's response immature and inflammatory. My ships are also not to fetishize aesthetics or concepts, but explore the development of the characters involved. Intimacy is much different from shallow smut, and I create to build the former. But haters can continue screaming into their echo chambers because apparently they have nothing better to do with their lives. Must not have a lot going on if this is what they’re obsessing over.

Meanwhile, I have work to do, so this is the only comment I will make about the recent bigotry in my direction. And stalking people, finding any crumb of imagined/exaggerated misstep to try and shit on someone online over a difference of opinion only signals the poster is a miserable person not worth anyone’s time.

Should any part of this passage be quoted, screenshot or otherwise referenced in the harassment in my direction, that will be proof of block circumvention and grounds to further escalate intervention from DeviantArt's support team.

* = I'm aware no one might see this, or it will be ridiculed on tumblr like apparently anything else I've ever said or did has been. But that's also fine, no amount of anonymous cancel culture is going to undermine the true support and friendship I have. The incident only tangentially involves me, and it's very likely the blacklisted members that precipitated the harassment, which I and several others have reported. Thanks for showing part of why you're banned - way to prove us right.
